STOPoverty activities


Between Thursday, 15 and Saturday, 25 October several events will take place around Malta to mark International Eradication of Poverty Day.


On Thursday, 15 at 1600h ActionAid’s photographic exhibition, ‘Hunger Free Women Speak out’ be inaugurated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Tonio Borg at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This exhibition will then run from Friday, 16 to Thursday 22, October 0930h to 1600h. Admission is free of charge.


Between Friday, 16 and Sunday 18 October ‘Stand Up Take Action’ will be held in Malta and Gozo. This activity encourages the Maltese public to stand up for 1 minute to remember the poor of the world and to symbolically urge governments to keep their promises. Please send any photographs of your Stand Up and the number of people who took part to standupmalta@gmail.com.


On Friday, 16 October, World Food Day, the right to food campaign ‘Kieku l-Ikel Jitekellem’ will be launched, during a press conference. Usha Ravikumar and Kamala Narasappa, 2 Indian workers, will participate in this event, passing on a message of ethical consumption. On Saturday, 17 October at 2000h Theatrencore will perform Ceda l-Imbatt (in Maltese) followed by a discussion about poverty, the Millennium Development Goals and the Mediterranean region at the MITP, St. Christopher Street, Valletta.


On Sunday, 19 October from 1800h to 2000h Mr. Adrian Mamo will lead a workshop about Art Campaigning Management at St.James Cavalier. Those interested can attend this event free of charge however it is limited to 40 places. Fair Trade refreshments will be available. On Saturday, 24 October Moviment Graffitti will hold their annual 'Reclaim the World' activity in Valletta. The slogan for this year’s reclaim the world campaign is "you are what you eat!" ("Ghidli x'tiekol u nghidlek x'int!").


On Saturday, 24 October at 0900h a dialogue event titled ‘Y Standup’ will be held at Attard Parish Centre. This event will involve young people in discussions on poverty issues locally, and at European and international level. The young people will be invited to discuss their commitment to reducing poverty on these different levels, while also offering possible routes for policy and action to Church and Government authorities.
